TSU Bullard Center Receives Gulf Research Program Grant to Study Impact of Systemic Racism on Health and Climate Vulnerability in Black Communities

The Bullard Center for Environmental and Climate Justice at Texas Southern University received a $100,000 planning grants from the Gulf Research Program to develop a full proposal to compete for follow-on award of up to $1.5 million. The TSU team will partner with five predominantly African American communities in the Gulf Coast region to explore how social determinants create and maintain elevated environmental and health disparities and climate risks. They will also work on solutions to address structural inequality and systemic racism. “It’s important that HBCUs and our frontline community partners lead the research and find solutions that unpack the impact of systemic racism and other structures that heighten vulnerability of Black Gulf Coast communities to environmental, health and climate threats,” states professor Robert D. Bullard.  He leads the project along with Dr. Beverly Wright of the Deep South Center for Environmental Justice in New Orleans.  The two veteran environmental justice leaders also co-chair the HBCU-CBO Gulf Coast Equity Consortium—a five-state network that will have a major role in this community based participatory research project.  Continue Reading
